One of the most basic things you can attempt to do to improve the sound, and indeed the look of a record, is to wipe the playing surface with a cloth - but what type of cloth and which solution should be used  - water, washing up liquid, alcohol - the internet is awash (!) with ides and advice...BUT...the professional way to do it and achieve positive results is to use a powerful ultrasonic machine built specifically for cleaning every spot of dirt from the plastic. All sizes of record are fine - 7", 10" and 12"...vinyl or styrene.
